Meet Maleficent, the 2014 Dragon Robotics FRC robot. The robot is named after the evil dragon in Walt Disney’s movie Sleeping Beauty. When the evolution of going from the Biohazards to the Dragons took place, in 2012, the team decided to name every robot after a dragon.
Build Process
We designed this robot primarily for: offense, gathering balls from the ground, shooting into the high goal and over the truss, and catching the balls that are shot. We decided on this strategy while going through the engeneering and design cycle. This year we tried to stick more closely to the cycle to maximize our poductivity.
Some components of our strategy are:
1.) Autonomous: Our autonomous drives forward then shoots into the high goal. We start just behind the white zone.
2.) Shooter: We are using a “kicker” that spins around using two CIM motor’s we can make the high goal.
3.) Loader: Our loader is located on the front of our robot. We use a spatula, or “dragon’s tongue” that picks up the balls by driving up to them and scooping them up. It uses 2 CIM motors, and 2 mini CIMS to rotate the arm.
4.) Catching: Catching is done with our loading device by raising our loader as a capture device for the ball when tossed to us.
5.) Drive Train: We used the kit drive train: the am14u with 6 wheels, belt driven powered by 2 CIM motors. The drive train is 32x23 inches.
Here is a list of all of our team's previous robots:
